A few simple steps can help make your lab visit quick, safe, and successful.
The essentials
• Follow the prep instructions on your lab order
• If fasting is required, stop eating at midnight
• Have a clean, indoor space ready (no outdoor blood draws)
• Keep your phone nearby. We'll text you when we're close.
1. Check your lab instructions
Review your lab order and follow any preparation instructions from your ordering provider.
If your labs require fasting, begin fasting at 12:00 a.m. the night before your appointment. If your provider or lab order gives different fasting instructions, follow those instead.
While fasting:
- Drink only water, and plenty of it
- Avoid coffee, juice, alcohol, and other beverages
- Take medications as directed by your provider
2. Prepare your space
Your appointment must take place indoors in a clean, private area. Please have:
- A clean table, desk, or other flat surface for supplies
- Good lighting and a comfortable chair
- Enough room for your phlebotomist to work safely
- Pets secured in another room
3. Dress for easy arm access
Wear clothing that lets you easily expose your arm, like you would for an in-office lab visit.
4. Stay hydrated and reachable
Unless your provider says otherwise, drink plenty of water before your appointment. It can make your blood draw easier.
Your phlebotomist may text you when they're 2 stops and 1 stop away, so keep your phone nearby.
Does this apply to you?
Providing a urine sample
If we're picking up a sample you've already collected:
- Collect your sample no earlier than the morning of your appointment
- Follow the collection and storage instructions from your provider or lab
- Have your lab order and sample ready when your phlebotomist arrives
If we're collecting your sample during the visit:
- Drink enough water so you're able to provide a sample
- If possible, avoid using the restroom for 30 to 60 minutes before your appointment
Patient under 18
A parent or legal guardian must be present for the entire appointment. If no parent or guardian is present when your phlebotomist arrives, the appointment can't proceed and may be canceled. The appointment fee may still apply.
